portfolio accountant

A vacancy has arisen for a project controller / portfolio accountant to join an international developments project team based in Cambridge. The international projects team works in developing countries helping to alleviate poverty, increase access & capacity of healthcare, improve education, water, sanitation, infrastructure, energy & transport.

Working within the skilled & growing finance team which provides a broad range of financial services to their international development team, this role is diverse & stimulating where you can develop your career with the potential of overseas travel to work on projects actually on location as well as discretionary study support.

The Position:

  • Working with the chief accountant as the primary support contact & deputising if & when required
  • Ensuring internal financial controls are in place & maintained
  • Creating project budgets & monitoring performance within the financial management systems
  • Preparing operational expenditure analysis at both portfolio & divisional level, identifying areas of concern for the divisional accountant
  • Bank/balance sheet reconciliations & petty cash for overseas entities
  • Assistance with budget & forecasting
  • Check/upload expenditure for international projects onto the group finance system
  • Track actual vs budget spend
  • Ensure timely client billing with relevant documentation
  • Raise invoice & credit notes
  • Preparation of various journals
  • Provide general ad hoc financial assistance to project managers/directors
  • Process expense claims

What we’re looking for:

  • AAT Qualified or equivalent experience
  • CIMA/ACCA part qualified or equivalent
  • An interest in international, ethical & ecological work
  • Analytical approach to financial data
  • Previous experience working with a finance role & demonstrable financial aptitude
  • Willing to travel to worldwide sites for short term projects
  • Knowledge of various financial systems
  • Competent in MS office with strong Excel skills
  • Highly numerate with great attention to detail
  • A flexible & organised approach to work
  • Proactive, ambitious, keen to develop & the ability to working independently
